Smarty Jones rides to victory

Smarty Jones ran for the roses at the 2004 Kentucky Derby, and wasted the field in the process. He went on to take the Belmont in fine fashion, and appeared a shoe-in for the triple crown. Alas, the longer distance of the Preakness was his undoing, and this plucky little horse that captured the hearts of many heartless Americans was quickly forgotten because he did something which is inexcusable (to those same heartless Americans anyway): he didn't win. We at the bourbonhours don't let trivial issues of wins and losses get in our way. We'll raise a glass to Smarty any old time. We celebrate the try.

And as for trying, the 2004 Derby Party was a rousing success, despite the fact that so many of us finished out of the running. Some finished earlier than others, and some had to be forcibly removed from the track for their own safety, but it was all worth the effort.

The juleps were sublime and the Hill family once again opened their doors and their hearts to usher in the party of the season!
