Cooking With Bourbon

Bourbon is more than a quaff in our house: it’s also a spice, the backstop of a sauce, and the flavor you try to guess in a dessert. In other words, we cook with the stuff. Often.

We’re not the only ones apparently. The University Press of Kentucky has recently published an award winning cookbook inspired by our favorite alcoholic beverage. The Kentucky Bourbon Cookbook by Alfred W. A. Schmid has won the Gourmand International award for Best Cooking with Drink book.

This book looks to be loaded with great recipes, bourbon lore, and something that is often lacking in the harried kitchens of the nation: inspiration. We’ll be picking up a copy forthwith.

Man Attempts Matricide For Southern Comfort

A Phoenix AZ man has been arrested and charged with second degree attempted murder after he allegedly tried to strangle and beat his mother with a chain necklace. The man in question is Robert Conley, a 31 years old resident of Apache Junction. According to reports he was drinking Southern Comfort in his mother’s Phoenix apartment. When she arrived home and found him there she poured out the remainder of the booze, which apparently led to Conley’s violence.

This is obviously terribly sad for the mother, who received multiple injuries as a result of the attack. Mr. Conley has apparently threatened to kill other members of his family when he gets out of jail.

I always said nothing good could come from Southern Comfort.

Pappy Van Winkle in the Money (news)

CNN’s Fortune Magazine site has a great read on the Van Winkle brand, which the article describes as being a “cult brand”. The Winkle secret is to keep volumes low, quality high, and prices rising. They are profitable at a low volume which is an unusual profile in the business. Julian Van Winkle III, grandson of the legendary Pappy whose image adorns the Van Winkle bottlings, is the current custodian of the family business, believes in the small is better model.

That’s been the downfall of a lot of bourbon producers…They just make too much of it. It loses all cachet and is not as special.

One of the Van Winkle “secrets” seems to be patience – after all, who else is selling 23 year old bourbon? Hit up the source for a great read.

The Bourbonhours Gospel Hour

For an agnostically inclined website we do have an almost remarkable amount of music that is for lack of a better word gospelly. We have a ton of music from the folk/bluegrass/blues traditions that often bleeds into the realm of (Christian) gospel. We also come from family that is Christian, to varying degrees.

While the bourbonhours.com space is certifiably organic when it comes to religion, it would be dishonest for us not to honour the musical tradition that pops up in our collection so often. To that end, we are starting the official Bourbonhours Gospel Hour playlist with a single number, with more sure to follow.

Falling Up, Ricky Lee Jones, ffrom The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard
May Jesus Wash the Bloodstains From Your Hands
, Bill Frisell, from Nashville
Eve Stole The Apple
, Abigail Washburn, from Songs of the Travelling Daughter
Jesus
, Glenn Campbell, from Meet Glenn Campbell

Friday Night In East Van: A Bourbonhours definition

Well, the origin of the phrase is innocuous enough. We were sitting around one evening many years ago at my friend Don’s house, having cocktails and shooting a Friday night breeze. Someone made a reference to some obscure and horrendous sexual act, and Don piped up “that sounds like Friday night in East Van.” The conversation moved on after a few guffaws but I’ve never forgotten that line. I use it all the time in a variety of situations — it’s very handy i find.

I’ve been reading Jack Kerouac’s Big Sur of late, and came across  a section  where Jack describes Neil Cassady in his own endearing way which pretty much sums up the whole Friday Night in East Van thing for me:

Because he was always tremendously generated towards complete relationship with his women to the point where they ended up in one convoluted octopus mess of souls and tears and fellatio and hotel room schemes and rushing in and out of cars and doors and great crises in the middle of the night, wow that madman you can at least write on his grave someday “He Lived, He Sweated” — No halfway house is Cody’s house —

Jack Kerouac, Big Sur

Taking the salient –er– seminal part out for the actual definition of Friday Night In East Van:

Friday Night In East Van, phrase: a convoluted octopus mess of souls and tears and fellatio and hotel room schemes and rushing in and out of cars and doors and great crises in the middle of the night.

Publican, Pour Me A Shot

Heard this word while watching English tv last night: publican. The reference was to the owner of a bar, and sure enough, that’s one of the meanings of this word.

I went into a public-’ouse to get a pint o’ beer,
The publican ‘e up an ‘sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”

Rudyard Kipling, Tommy

The English are a bit wordy, but they do have some good ones.

Festival Of Bourbon

Bardstown Bourbon Barrel Relay

Bardstown Bourbon Barrel Relay

And no, I’m not referring to Friday night in East-Van, but rather the annual Bardstown Kentucky event celebrating the bourbon industry. It sounds like a whole lot of good clean fun, and if I was in the neighbourhood I would definitely attend, if only to see grown men dancing with bourbon barrels.

Alas, I’ll console myself with the other Festival of Bourbon….

Texas Man Arrested With Jack Daniels

In other news, the sun rose and set. The story isn’t all that much but I did like the title from this Corpus Christi Texas report: “Loaded gun, bottle of Jack Daniels land underage man in hot water”.

Man and Child On Outing, Stop to Steal Booze

From the “you can’t make this crap up” category, the Geelong Advertiser is reporting on a crime leaning to the bizarre side of the bar. The report says that a man in his mid thirties with what looked to be a six year old male child was seen leaving a liquor store with six cases of hard liquor (Jim Beam and Jack Daniels apparently). He was followed out by a manager and accosted in his car, but he drove off after bumping a group who were trying to help apprehend him.

Fatherly love huh?
